Tucson teens work with city, state officials to promote climate action

February 10, 2023

Dozens of Tucson teenagers are advocating for climate justice across the state and making sure their voices are part of important community conversations.

The Arizona Youth Climate Coalition got its start in 2019 as part of the nationwide Youth Climate Strike, inspired by Swedish student Greta Thunberg, who staged a protest outside of the Swedish parliament the year in August 2018.

Prop 412 Rejected Because of Climate Concerns, Foreshadowing What Must Happen Next

by Ojas Sanghi and Brendan Anderson

June 7, 2023

It was not higher fees that killed Tucson’s Prop. 412. Instead, it was the Democratic, liberal vote — the climate vote — that tanked this proposition. The climate-concerned electorate may not have been all of the voters against Prop 412, but they were the deciding group.

If TEP, the Mayor and Council wish to pass a new franchise agreement, getting these voters onboard will be critical.

I'm 15. I worry about climate change. And now, I'm fighting back

by Sonia Fernandez

May 31, 2019

As a rising high school junior, my mind is constantly consumed with worry over grades, college, learning to drive and preparing for debate tournaments.

But a new worry is overwhelming me: the deep fear I have for the future, where myself, my family, and my friends may face an impending ecological disaster.

I know I’m not alone in this – around the world millions of youth have organized to protest our right to a safe future.

Arizona’s politicians are not addressing our climate crisis. We need to make them

by Brian Mecinas

Sep 19, 2019

A few weeks ago, I turned 18 years old. I’m young. I’m enthusiastic. I’m excited for the future I should have ahead of me.
There’s just one thing: Arizona’s politicians – like U.S. Sen. Martha McSally, who has continued to support President Donald Trump’s toxic environmental agenda – have taken my future and stomped it into the ground with their indifference to the climate crisis.
This indifference drives me to work as an organizer with the Arizona Youth Climate Strike. Our team works to bring climate change to the forefront of our state’s political stage. We’ve held strikes drawing attention to the issue and town halls creating dialogue with elected officials, but there’s still more to be done.
